While as per today, ~55% of the world's population lives in urban areas, it is projected that it would reach ~2.5 billion by 2050, with ~90% of this increase in Asia & Africa. With such an upsurge of urban population and climate change increase of the average seasonal atmospheric temperature, various sectors would be under pressure, including energy, water resources & food security. In this regard, the multi-disciplinary field of nanosciences could be exploited to uncover potential technological solutions for such societal challenges. Within this contribution, several examples of functional nanomaterials developed within the framework of the UNESCO Africa Nanochair will be presented. This includes nanomaterials for room temperature decarbonization, water decontamination, smart windows & green air conditioning as well as novel generation of nanofluids for heat management & energy efficiency
